Newcastle East Public School enrolment cap
Newcastle East Public School has a set enrolment cap based on 11 permanent classrooms. This ensures there is space for local students who move into the area during the year.
- Total enrolment cap: 286 students (Kindergarten – Year 6)
- Buffer: 274 (reserved for local students)
- Non-local enrolments: Once enrolments reach 274, non-local places will no longer be offered.
If a non-local child starts Kindergarten, younger siblings are not guaranteed a place in future years. Their enrolment will depend on available space.
Moving to high school
Finishing primary school and preparing for high school is an important and exciting step for our students and their families. Although Year 7 may seem some time away, the enrolment process begins much earlier than many people expect. High schools undertake extensive planning to organise placements, so it is essential that families meet the required timelines.
Expressions of Interest for Year 7 2027 open on 2 March 2026. We strongly encourage all families to submit their Expression of Interest as soon as possible to support a smooth and well organised transition to high school.
If your child intends to apply for Hunter School of the Performing Arts, Merewether High School, or Hunter Sports High School, please be aware that offers for these schools are not finalised until later in the year. To ensure your child has a confirmed placement option, families should also submit an Expression of Interest for their local high school as a back up.
Submitting an EOI here Moving to high school ensures your child has a confirmed pathway into high school while awaiting the outcome of specialist or selective school applications.
If you have any questions about the process, please contact the school office.
